Dear Ms. Kopperud,
Thank you for your e-mail
dated 12 May 2002. Keeshonden are very rare dogs in South Africa. Our
annual Registration Statistics show that we had none registered between
1995 and March 2001 when a Mr. A.J. Carter of Tygervalley, Cape Town
registered a bitch imported from the United Kingdom. Looking back at the
last sixtyfive years the statistics show that the Keeshond has always been
a relatively rare breed.
So far as the history of
the Keeshond is concerned, the first Reg. No. 44057 DOCHFOUR WILLI (D) was
registered in 1936. Then there were no registrations until 1950 when two
were registered. Numbers then rose to reach a peak of 639 in 1967 after
which numbers rapidly declined, dropping to 161 by 1975 and never
exceeding forty annually from 1979 onwards.
We trust this information
will help you in putting a worldwide picture of the breed together.
Yours sincerely,
Michael R. Darwin
Manager, Research &
Statistics.
